OpenStack Consolidation Is (Almost) Complete--Cisco Buys PistonCloud, IBM Buys BlueBox

OpenStack Consolidation Is (Almost) Complete--Cisco Buys PistonCloud, IBM Buys BlueBox

And here we go, the last two men standing at the end of fall. Today's news that IBM acquires OpenStack Blue Box supplier, while Cisco PistonCloud sought.
These deals come just weeks after another provider OpenStack, nebula, folded, and a few months after a significant number of deals in the space with Cisco and EMC CloudScaling purchase Metacloud purchase. Along with these deals, EMC and HP also bought Virtustream purchased Eucalyptus.
With these two deals we have almost reached the end of the long-planned consolidation OpenStack. Mirantis, pure-play provider OpenStack highest category is always independent, and probably for an IPO Meanwhile, small players like Aptira respected provider Aussie continues to shine.
But the big name suppliers of the United States OpenStack, this beautiful marks the end of the independents. So has this little trip was a success or a failure?
It's a little hard to say because the terms of the agreements have not been announced, but most people suspected Piston Cloud was near death of the company. This, coupled with the fact that Cisco already has a lot of things going on OpenStack indicate that, if the case was PistonCloud acquihire more than anything else. Cisco also announced last year that the shift to delivering InterCloud, a global network led by partners in the cloud running OpenStack.
Blue Box is perhaps a little more interesting. IBM, of course, there SoftLayer bought a couple of years and also has its own history of OpenStack happen. In a recent Gartner Magic Quadrant for cloud providers, there was little love given the success of IBM in space, perhaps BlueBox help with this. Where is the blue box in all this is a little hard to say. Blue Box add a OpenStack offering remotely manage the portfolio of IBM and, given the small amount of money the company has raised to date, perhaps the matter was obvious to IBM (and allows the blue box equipment for a breathing space).
OpenStack has been from day one, it's a little sad to see the end of all these independent companies - some momentum could only have gone now. But perhaps it is also a sign of maturity of a project and a safe landing for all participants.
