Cisco launches code review after Juniper's spyware disclosure

However, it found any unauthorized code but continuously reviewing

Cisco Systems has launched an internal code revision after the disclosure last week of code Juniper unauthorized spying in our products the company firewall.

So far, "we have no indication of unauthorized code to our products," wrote Anthony Grieco, senior director of security and confidence Organization of Cisco, in a blog post Monday.

The code review was initiated by Cisco and not the result of contact with the police, Grieco wrote.

Juniper said Thursday an internal audit discovered that could allow the secret code and remote access VPN connections also undertake encrypted. The code has been found in some versions of an operating system called ScreenOS firewall devices powers.

Juniper Research, but so far he has not said he suspects that the code was inserted. Frank admission of the company met with praise, but hoping to get more details are released.

Juniper The problem is the latest in a series of problems affecting major network providers, including routers and firewalls have deep access to Internet traffic in an organization. The devices are key points of launching espionage campaigns.

Leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden in 2013 documents showed how Western intelligence agencies have tried to undermine the team by Juniper, Huawei and Cisco.

Grieco wrote that Cisco development practices prohibit the inclusion of "back doors" in their products. Backdoors allow account credentials as secret access undocumented, clandestine channels of communication or tools undocumented trade diversion.

No similar to those discovered by Juniper have been found in code Cisco indicators Grieco wrote. Cisco processes include penetration testing and code reviews by network engineers and cryptography wrote.

"Despite our normal practices should detect unauthorized software, we recognize that any process can eliminate all risks," says Grieco.

Since Snowden was a public document, Cisco has worked hard at demystifying suspicions that he voluntarily worked with intelligence agencies like the NSA.

Demystifying Cisco's Five Pillar Innovation Strategy

Large companies that are leaders in their industry in general have difficulty maintaining the entrepreneurial spirit that has its leadership position in the first place. On the one hand it has a social "new" relatively few companies like Facebook FB -1.92% that keep growing and, secondly, with companies like Yahoo YHOO -3.13% struggling in the new era of mobility, and the emerging wave IoT. For a company with a market capitalization of more than $ 130 billion, it is difficult for a company like Cisco Systems CSCO + 0.00% and peers to continue to innovate as they did when they started. While innovation is not necessarily on the structure when it comes to big business, we have to have some order around and it seems that executives and employees to waste time and have fun. Pouf chairs, open office, Starbucks SBUX -1.74% and gastronomy at work should be balanced with clear objectives and accountability. That's why Cisco has developed an innovation strategy multifaceted and structured to ensure that the innovative spirit is kept alive while taking responsibility.

Cisco's strategy is structured around five pillars. These five pillars are what you expect, if you have been involved in any part of the product or business strategy to build, buy, partner, co-invest and develop. Although these pillars may not be unique, I think the shape and amplitude that Cisco Systems is performed on them. I spent some time delving into the engine of innovation Cisco and want to share some of my findings.

Build

Promote the culture of innovation, Cisco was the first to build products and create their own IP (Intellectual Property). Cisco has more than 70,000 employees and of these, 25,000 are engineers ending require $ 6.3 billion in R & D. While the success of innovation is not only determined by how much you spend, but rather so spend on it and what you do with it, $ 6.3B dwarfs its rival networks -3.57% JNPR Juniper Networks, Brocade Communications Systems, Palo Alto Networks and Arista Networks. The amount of R & D spending indicates that Cisco puts gravity to maintain market leadership and the creation of new and innovative products.

The company strives to enhance the culture of innovation by implementing certain practices that foster innovation. Some of these practices include having 35% of engineers working in an environment of agile development and generally work on smaller, more agile teams. They are also supporting the project called "Alpha" which facilitate new disruptive technologies that drive innovation. As a result of these efforts, the company was able to generate 19,000 patents worldwide, with 12,000 of those coming to the United States.

Cisco also operates a technology investment fund that has financed 18 projects. These efforts are common among large high-tech companies as a way to influence small new companies that could be potential acquisition targets and the drivers of demand for its existing products.

Cisco ACI Adds Docker, OpFlex, Layer 4-7 Support

Docker support. OpFlex support. A greater emphasis on layer 4-7 services. These are some of the enhancements Cisco deploys the new version of software for infrastructure Centric, or TIA applications.

Meta larger image Cisco is enhancing its portfolio Defined Network (SDN) software built on open APIs, open standards and flexible ecosystem. The move could appease some critics Cisco accused the company of being too exclusive in the past.

"Customers tell me that only five to 10 percent of their networks are automated today," said Soni Jiandani, senior vice president of Cisco. "They are willing to take the full automation of their networks and network services through a single pane of management, while improving security applications east-west traffic, multi-cloud and bare metal flow coherence.

Looking for complete automation

Cisco aims to offer its new software features, including heterogeneous virtualized environments including Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware VDS and microsegmentation for physical applications. The promise to deliver new automation capabilities across multiple data centers in multi-site environments.

The containers Docker integration technology is the ACI contributions to open source. This means that Cisco can now offer a model of coherent policy more flexibly with the AIT. Support for the integration of automated service for any third layer of third party services 7.4 could also make the company running.

"The policy-based automation, network security, and a central support compliance are essential to IT efficiency, business agility and competitive advantage," said Jiandani. "Several customers ACI achieve complete automation of the network and focus on automation in their 4-7 network services, security groups and applications layers as the next step".

Defying critics

CliQr, DataTorrent Vnomic and already part of the 43 members of CREA Cisco ecosystem. The company just added Apprenda, KillerIT, convergence and ScienceLogic mix. These four new players offer Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) that help organizations automate all of their applications and infrastructure equipment.

Besides all this, Cisco now supports ACI automation tools as OpenStack and VMware cloud automation and support vRealize OpFlex with Open vSwitch based on open standards.

We talk to Zeus Kerravala, principal analyst at ZK Research, to get his thoughts on the improved AIT. He said that this update the relevance of extending infrastructure.

"Cisco has a wide SDN-based standards approach. In the past, Cisco has been criticized for being closed and proprietary," Kerravala said. "What Cisco SDN includes success is really based on allowing an ecosystem of partners to work with you. That's what we focus on and there are a large part of this release. My research shows Cisco's SDN many more deployments than any other provider that does not exist. "

Arista Networks, Facebook Advance on Cisco

I recently attended the conference structure in 2015 in San Francisco, where we witnessed a wide range of information technology executives presentations largest providers of cloud computing and IT spenders.

Each year the conference focuses on emerging trends between the two titans of cloud computing and the largest IT spend, and the range of loudspeaker allows identification of these issues through a series of presentations by top the most important companies in cloud computing.

Software Defined Network (SDN) and cloud which remain a threat to Cisco Systems (ticker: CSCO) (nominal Under perform, target price of $ 22). With short-term slowdown in sales growth, we remain concerned about the long term when considering the impact of the SDN, threatening what remains to be the most profitable part of the IT stack. We believe that it will introduce competition in various points of the network and at the same time the impact will take time, the threat is very real, the dollars shrink gross profit for the entire network stack. We believe Facebook (FB) ambitions in networks and the rise of Arista Networks (ANET) are two distinct issues to deal with.

Arista (rated at Outperform, target price $ 90) is positioned to benefit from the public cloud transition. While the increase in domestic developments Facebook could pose a threat in the long term, the company is positioned to benefit disproportionately from growth Titans cloud with a silicon-based portfolio of commodities and a system of open and highly programmable operation, Arista EOS. This, along with the transition to 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and especially networking presents an opportunity for a history of secular and robust growth.

Although strategic work loads are likely to fall, the appeal of Amazon.com (AMZN) Web Services (AWS), Google (GOOGL) and Microsoft (MSFT) and affinity of the developers of these platforms platforms and potentially limits growth budgetary pressures in the International Business Machines (IBM) (nominal value of $ 125, Lower target price). Here we see the margin software and services a significant risk, our longstanding concerns lay because of the high equipment and attach the cannibalization of the transition to the cloud.

We believe that the secular impact of the cloud means that revenue growth for most of the traditional actors in the company remains difficult in terms of up and down. For Hewlett Packard Company (HPE) (rated at neutral, price target $ 19), we believe that it remains a headwind for much of the portfolio (storage servers, networks and services).

Oracle, HP, Cisco embrace the cloud

SAN JOSE, California (TNS) -. A cloud of Internet crowd is wrapping some of the legendary Silicon Valley companies, forcing a revolution in the way they did business for decades.

In what some would say is a belated recognition that the cloud is the future of computing, the venerable Valley businesses as Hewlett-Packard, Oracle and Cisco Systems are struggling to build data centers to launch new lines of business to create services cloud and convert software supplied on a software box that is rented on the Internet.

"Senior management, the Board and investors see this giant iceberg that comes to them," said Patrick Moorhead of Moor Insights and Strategy. "It is not a trivial task to make a request of their own people age 10 and moves it to the cloud."

But there is another option - a change from the traditional networks internally companies faster, cheaper centers accessible data through Internet is changing the business model of information technology and to create a market Cloud $ 235.1 billion in 2017, according to research firm IHS."There is a radical change in what most customers are looking for," said Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman analysts in September. "Our customers are in a period of transformation and transition seen only once every 10-15 years in this industry."

Next month, HP will split into two companies, one of them - Hewlett Packard Company - will be managed by Whitman and focus on business services, big data, mobile computing public and hybrid and private cloud. The new HP is the result of a "journey" of four years, the company began in 2011,

Whitman said.

"We were in danger of falling behind in the technology sector began a plate tectonic shift in what we call the new style of computing driven by cloud, big data, security and mobility," she dit-. The full extent cloud HP revenue will be about $ 3 billion, a growth of 20 percent for the coming years, he added.

In further evidence of the changing market, Dell announced this month it bought storage company EMC data in a merger $ 67 billion that is driven in part by the pressure on the two companies' mobile computing and cloud with Michael Dell citing "the need to enter this new era" in an interview with CNBC

Nowhere conversion to the more striking than Oracle, traditionally sold software and hardware companies to operate their own data centers cloud.

Oracle founder Larry Ellison is renowned for rejecting the cloud as little more than the latest in computer mode.

"I do not know what everyone is talking about," he told financial analysts in 2008. "It's a really complete gibberish. When idiocy going to stop?"That was then. The giant software company has just completed three years of construction of data centers worldwide as co-CEO Safra Catz called "this very rapid transition see who you really are the backbone of this fiscal year."

"This is one of the most important changes in the history of the company," said Shawn Price, senior vice president of Oracle, speaking by telephone from Sao Paolo, Brazil, where Oracle opened a new data center. Price was hired away from SAP last year to run the cloud strategy and marketing at Oracle."The future is here and now. We bother. We say that a lot of companies are trying to solve, can not solve the principle" with its own data center operation, Price said. "We say, 'Let's run for you."Oracle deploys its cloud services in 19 data centers in 14 different countries over 90 times increase in data center capacity, Ellison told analysts on a conference call in September on its results for the first quarter of society.

"In the last three years, we have been in the cloud of our start-up business," Ellison said, sounding like a true believer. Oracle has installed more than 40,000 physical devices, virtual machines and 100,000 over 8 petabytes of storage, he said. "We now have in place the physical infrastructure to significantly expand our customers from the central cloud.""It has changed a lot in two years," said David Bartoletti, cloud and Management Analyst at Forrester Research. "I think it was a natural reaction. When you're a big software company whose income depends quotas and licenses, the cloud looks very scary."For many businesses, the public cloud is one way to save on the cost of operating your own data operation. No need to buy expensive server computers, it is not necessary to buy and upgrade software, and should not maintain the system.

"Companies see it as a cost of wells where the money is going to die," said Carl Brooks 451 Research."You have an IT department to do the double last year and no budget to do it. The only way to resolve it is to seek external economies. Amazon for $ 1 is twice as much as I can. I do the same Amazon takes 17 cents on top, and said: "We will be there when you need us." You must not break any ground, dig holes or build a building All companies, faced with this extreme pressure to increase capacity. (data) without increasing the budget, look out. "

The cloud has another great advantage, in addition to cost savings: speed. For example, Softlayer, acquired by IBM, can build a data center for a client and start working in a couple of days, analysts said.Cisco Systems, which sells network equipment for corporate clients, announced an investment of billions of dollars in "cloud infrastructure" Two years ago, and "continue to make investments in engineering and procurement transform other parts of its portfolio in the age of the cloud, "said a spokesman."In many ways, Cisco will be a strong supplier for all who build and manage clouds," Bartoletti said. "Everything will depend on the solid rock in an entire network."

But Cisco faces headwinds that large cloud computing companies, Facebook, Google and Amazon, to develop their own network hardware.

"Companies are trying to reduce their investments in internal hardware, and the cloud is very attractive," said Jack Gold of J. Gold Associates. "They should not go out and buy a lot of servers and Cisco routers."Another company of antiquity, the chip maker Intel, seems to win no matter what, since almost everyone uses chips it does for data center servers. But even Intel is jumping on the cloud. An initiative will be announced in July to help companies implement "hybrid" public and private cloud.

"We all like the clouds," said Intel spokesman Mark O. Miller. "We do not have to pick winners."

Big Shakeups At Cisco In Russia Amid Bribery And Sanctions Allegations

The technology giant Cisco Systems closed its Internet department in Moscow that sell the company to government, military and intelligence agencies of Russia, three former employees of Cisco BuzzFeed News said.

Cisco, based in San Jose, California, is currently under investigation for corruption by the Federal Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission. As BuzzFeed News reported in 2014, the complainants alleged a vast system of kickbacks involving Russian business operations. The company says it is working with the US government and internal investigation on corruption charges.

BuzzFeed News in May this year also revealed allegations concerning Cisco equipment sales to the Russian military and intelligence agencies. The report found that executives of Cisco in Russia had changed sales records and booked a case under an assumed name customer. There is no indication that the federal government of the United States is investigating allegations of sanctions violations.

Cisco changed sales records, according to a confidential source, as a way to circumvent Western sanctions that prohibit certain technology sales organizations of Russian military sales hiding behind innocuous sounding figureheads. Cisco has admitted that the files have been changed, but denied that he was trying to evade sanctions, saying that all sales made in the past for the Russian army and the dreaded FSB - the successor to the KGB - were completely legal.

Moving to dissolve the Cisco department that handled the sales of the Russian government - which was called the Public Sector Unit - arrived in September. Sales, he handled were distributed to other parts of the Moscow office of Cisco, the three sources, and about eleven employees were dismissed or transferred to other operations.

Cisco spokesman Nigel Glennie, in an email, said that "the restructuring of Cisco in Russia took place in several teams, reflecting the results of the latest business and market conditions. We still have a team that supports licit sales . to our customers in the Russian public sector "He added:" Our latest results call we mean a drop of 38% in Russia reserves This may also provide an overview of the restructuring that took place between the teams. ".

Documents obtained by BuzzFeed News indicate that the public sector unit has sales of $ 35 million for fiscal 2015, which ended in July.

Meanwhile, the company changed the way that technology is important for Russia by reducing the use of intermediary companies, as first reported Tuesday the newspaper Kommersant.

Previously, Cisco would export its routers, switches railroad, telecommunications and Amsterdam four major Russian distributors, who then sell the equipment all over the country. Now, according to Kommersant business and Cisco BuzzFeed News he spoke with partners, Cisco export directly from Russia to a new subsidiary of the company he controls.

A former employee of Cisco says new BuzzFeed that this change is not related to the alleged violations of the sanctions, but in an effort to curb possible corruption. "It is directly related to the problems of the FCPA," he said, referring to the Law on Foreign Corrupt Practices of the United States.

However, the sales structure of Cisco in Russia will remain largely unchanged, according to Stanislav Somenkov, which manages Cisco products in the CRR, one of the four major distributors of the company. He said Cisco is committed to maintaining the company's contracts with its four Russian distributors, who will continue to sell Cisco's network of partners. "The structure remains" Somenkov said.

Alexander Yanovsky, Director of Marketing of Marvel, which is also a major distributor of Cisco, said his company was negotiating with Cisco to manage the transition to "a few negative points as possible."

Cisco spokesman said in its statement that "the deployment of this approach to other countries has been long planned and part of a global effort involving 25 countries."

Cisco in the last annual report to the SEC in September report, repeated a statement about the ACPF probe indicating that it is doing its own investigation on corruption charges. "We take these allegations very seriously and are cooperating fully with and share the results of our research with the SEC and the Justice Department," he wrote. The company uses this language in their filings with the SEC since February 2014.

Jessica Tillipman, deputy dean of the faculty of law at George Washington University and an expert on the FCPA, said the changes in its Russian office, Cisco may be trying to minimize the risk of corruption.

Not only "Usually, with the government in these long-term research," he said, "they are studying what happened, but the practices and procedures put in place to try to show that does not happen again."

Design fail flashback: This Cisco product may win the award for the worst design of all-time

Cisco switches expensive group released a few years ago set a new bar for industrial design idiot. Of course, it's very frustrating to potentially harm your Galaxy Note 5 by inserting the stylus in the wrong direction, but it is worse for monumental and completely accidental clean one server using the wrong type of Ethernet cable.

Initially discovered by The Next Web, Cisco in 2013 issued an alert advising users to be extremely careful with Champ line cables used in the 3650 and 3850 series switches Company.

The following figure shows now one of the network switches in question. At first glance, everything seems to be above board.

The problem, however, is that the reset button on the switch is located just above one of the ports. A closer look at the back of the device look reveals the glaring design error.

"Some types of Ethernet have locked protective boots that are too far forward and cables above the plastic locking tongue" warning bed Cisco "When this type of cable is installed in port 1 of any port model 48 C3650 or C3850 Cisco Catalyst Series switches, the shoe can hold down the mode button, which invokes the Quick Setup and reboots the system .... Where occurs, the device is restored. The startup configuration is erased once the device enter Express Setup ".

And a side view.

Of course subsequently deployed Cisco hardware upgrades to resolve the issue. While some switches have isolated the reset button, another place strategically the reset button between the two ports, as shown in the pictures below.

Chip Startup Backed by Cisco Systems Lands Eighth Funding Round

Most venture capitalists have arrested reproduction of semi-corporations. However, a chip maker Silicon Valley announced Monday its eighth funding round, with Cisco Systems Inc. reports its role as owner of a longstanding background.

The infusion of $ 37 million is being raised by Aquantia Corp., a company of 10 years, specializing in networking chips. The San Jose, Calif., Start talking about more than a year about the possibility of a rare initial public offering in the area of the chip.

"Our investors have been patient up to this point," said Faraj Aalaei, president and CEO Aquantia. He said he was going public "has always been the vision of the company."

Investors in the current round include Cisco, Credit Suisse Direct Equity Partners, and Walden Riverwood GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc., the chip manufacturing plant. The new cycle takes Aquantia total funding to $ 199 million. Before investors including Greylock Partners, New Enterprise Associates and Lightspeed Venture Partners.

Many venture capital firms have left the sector due to the rising costs of chip design, and new firms in other sectors tend to produce a rapid return on investment. PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP was 12. introductions semiconductor Fellowship in 2014 to -10 of them by Chinese companies - compared with 47 for and 35 Internet service for software vendors.

Aquantia attracted some well-known companies risk, and investments by chipmakers Intel Corp. and Xilinx Inc.

Cisco had already discussed his involvement in Aquantia, if the network equipment company, said last week that it is an investor and Aquantia initial round in 2005. The company also uses the chip in its switching equipment Aquantia said Rob Salvagno , Cisco vice president of business development directed its investment arm.

Cisco, which designs some of its own chips and other purchases from outside suppliers, in about 10 chip companies among its nearly 100 investments, said Mr. Salvagno.

For Aquantia, he said Cisco was attracted by technology to increase the speed of data movement between servers in a data center tenfold by sending chips of 10 gigabits of data per second on copper wire at distances up to 100 feet. The technology was designed to replace the gigabit links.

"It was an extremely complicated technology and power was very intense," said Mr. Salvagno. "We Aquantia had an approach that has solved the problems."

Aquantia has also developed chips to speed up access points Wi-Fi data transfer for corporate servers, said Mr. Aalaei.

Company chief rival Broadcom Corp. is the largest manufacturer of chips, which recently agreed to be acquired by Avago Technologies Ltd.

In addition to funding, Aquantia said Lip-Bu Tan, a prominent figure in the chip industry, has joined the board. Cisco Systems Inc. During the Chinese government will win?

Cisco expands further in China, but these investments to pay?

Giant Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) networks recently agreed to form a joint venture with Chinese manufacturer Inspur server networks and selling cloud computing products in China. The companies announced that they would invest $ 100 million in the project, but did not disclose specific details.

The association is a clear attempt to strengthen the presence of Cisco in China, where sales fell due to competition from cheaper Chinese rivals like Huawei, exacerbated by concerns about cybersecurity US technology companies. Let's look more closely at the difficult relationship with Cisco China, and the difficulties of other high-tech companies in the United States face in the country.

Cisco and China

Once upon a time, Cisco helped build the Great Wall of China. This project has been severely criticized, but helped the company gain a lot of credibility in China. But in the last decade, it is increasing the suspicions and caused leaks ciberespionaje Snowden US high-tech companies, including Cisco, falling from grace.

The Chinese government now plans to remove all foreign technology by banks, military enterprises, state-owned and government agencies in 2020, according to Bloomberg. This means that instead of using American processors, operating systems, network equipment and servers, all companies in "high security" could be forced to use homegrown technology.

To curry favor with the government over this fundamental change, Cisco recently agreed to invest more than $ 10 million through the Development Committee of China and the Reformation in the coming years to improve technical education in schools, create jobs, fund R & D efforts, and attract investment in equities. The joint venture with Inspur is linked to this broad thrust.

In fiscal 2015, revenue from Cisco APJC region (Asia-Pacific China, Japan and) fell 2% year on year to $ 7.2 billion and accounted for 15% of its turnover. Revenue in China was reduced by 21% per year, offsetting the modest gains elsewhere. Unless Cisco can curry favor with the Chinese government while pushing cheaper Chinese rivals, these losses continue to overload your sales APJC

The associations are the preferred choice

China, usually favors more independent joint ventures with Chinese companies in the country expansions. This means that US companies should share their profits with Chinese companies, but also get the experience and significant tax benefits if local products are made in China.

In March, IBM (NYSE: IBM) has agreed to license its designs to semiconductor chips, servers and software for several high-tech companies, including Chinese Inspur.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) has recently announced a partnership with Baidu (NASDAQ: BIDU) and private investment company Tsinghua Unigroup state to develop cloud computing technologies. This tripartite partnership was struck before the next release of Ubuntu Linux Chinese Kylin a well-developed operating system designed to replace Windows on government computers. Dell, which recently agreed to invest $ 125 billion in China over the next five years, Kylin will be installed in 40% of PCs sold in China.

These partnerships could help companies to avoid the fate of Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM), which was hit by an antitrust fine of $ 975 million last year.

Major attack

Major attack on Cisco routers: Protect your enterprise from SYNful Knock:

An earlier publication of this article stated that Synful Knock pressed a Cisco IOS vulnerability. FireEye and Cisco indicates that this can not be exploited by physical access, discovery of the administrator password, or use a default password. Cisco has published this guide on the detection and removal of the implant material in question.

Security research firm FireEye announced September 15, 2015, a major vulnerability in Cisco IOS called Synful Knock and allows attackers to take control of enterprise-class routers, allowing attackers to monitor all network communications, and provide a way more easy to infect other network devices.

At the time of release, there are 14 known infected routers across India, Mexico, the Philippines and Ukraine. Routers known models affected include the Cisco 1841, 2811 and 3825 routers, which are products that are no longer sold by Cisco. In an interview with Reuters, CEO Dave DeWalt said FireEye based on logs from affected routers, attacks have continued since "at least a year."

According FireEye, similarities in basic features and IOS software indicates that other router models are likely vulnerable to this exploit.

How does this vulnerability

According to the bulletin published by FireEye:

The implant consists of a modified image Cisco IOS that allows the attacker to load different functional modules of the anonymity of the Internet. The implant also provides unlimited access door using a stolen password secret. Each of the modules are activated via HTTP (not HTTPS) using a specially designed TCP packets sent to the router interface. The packages have a nonstandard sequence and the corresponding acknowledgment numbers. The modules can manifest executable code or hooks as an independent in the IOS routers that offer similar functionality to the backdoor password. The backdoor password allows access to the router through the console and Telnet.

The implant persists on the restart, but the modules loaded by the attackers exist only in RAM, and therefore are cleared after a reboot. Routers concerned retain the basic features of routers, making the existence of infected systems hard to notice.

In FireEye bulletin on the vulnerability, that's how it breaks down the changes to the Cisco IOS binary in these four aspects:

  •     Edit Address translation buffer (TLB) read / write attributes
  •     Edit a legitimate function IOS to call and initialize the malware
  •     Overwrite legitimate protocol management functions malicious code
  •     Overwrite strings referenced by legitimate functions with strings used by the malware

How to detect and seal the vulnerable systems

In the position of Cisco vulnerability, the company said it added a Snort rule to detect the affected systems. Considering the object and the placement of routers on the network, it is advisable to check the devices connected to networks in which the vulnerability was exploited to further intrusion

The modules loaded by the implant does not persist across reboots. For forensic purposes, collection of modules requires a core dump. FireEye said detailed instructions on how to detect the implant are coming.

As vulnerability persists across reboots, the only available option is to flash the router with the new Cisco IOS image available for the device to ensure complete removal of the implant.

Who is responsible for this attack?

Persistent attacks on enterprise class routers have so far been mainly theoretical problems, such as using protection and security in these devices are very different routers for home users, which were found to have induced vulnerabilities suppliers.

In an interview with Reuters, DeWalt declined to speculate on the specific sources of the attack, but noted that "[This] feat is only obtainable by a handful of players in the nation state. "Reuters names on the intelligence services of Britain, China, Israel, Russia and the United States as having the technical capability to orchestrate such an attack

Cisco rulings sink Arista stock

Arista reportedly suffered a setback in its litigation with Cisco that caused its stock to drop almost 6% this week. According to Investor’s Business Daily, International Trade Commission attorneys determined Arista infringed on three Cisco patents, causing the company’s stock to drop 5.6% Thursday.

Arista stock dropped 11% today on the ruling.

Cisco filed suit against Arista back in December, claiming copyright and patent infringement. Suits were filed in both federal court and the ITC.

The ITC action was intended to block Arista from importing and selling products in the United States that Cisco alleged infringed on its patents. It was an attempt to expedite the injunction of Arista product while Cisco patent and copyright infringement suits against the company wind their way through the court.

In July, a federal judge dismissed Cisco’s indirect infringement claims against Arista, a complaint that accompanied a patent and copyright infringement case. Just after this claim, Arista introduced its EOS+ operating system and Cisco then amended its claim to demand extra penalties for “willfulness” infringement.

The judge then ordered Cisco to amend its claim to make a stronger case that EOS+ was a new product and not a new version of an existing product.

Cisco provides an update on all of the litigation with Arista here. Here is Arista’s statement on the ITC ruling and on the cases overall:

Stop the presses: Cisco says

Stop the presses: Cisco says Cisco CEO is in charge of Cisco:

Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins is the guy who runs Cisco, not his predecessor and company CEO, John Chambers, according to a spokesman. Chambers, in fact, now reports to Robbins which is strange considering that the board directs Chambers Cisco Robbins says.

Included? Me neither. On Monday, Network World reported that four Cisco CSCO -1.43% engineers-key Mario Mazzola, Prem Jain, Luca Cafiero and Soni-Jiandani continued to report to the rooms after releasing the CEO on July 26, after 20 years in the helm.

Known collectively as MPLS, these frameworks have played a key role in business and the acquisition of Cisco's strategy and were richly rewarded for it.

Mazzola, Jain and Cafiero Insieme cofounded a company network as defined by Cisco software was a "spin-in." That means that Cisco was initially invested in 2012 with an option to purchase. Two years later Insieme Cisco bought for $ 863 million. The fourth direction, Jiandani, was a veteran who joined Cisco Insieme and returned to Cisco through this acquisition.

The four engineers in high state of Cisco for the year, and the participation of NetworkWorld story is to always get special treatment because it is very rare for line managers to inform a president, not the CEO.

-1.71% ORCL Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison still has a direct bearing on the side of technology, but also retained his title of chief technology so that the situation is different from what apparently happens in Cisco.

Cisco spokesman said he and Chambers best technicians of the company, including Pankaj Patel Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer, Robbins report.

"The key is to understand that our CEO, Chuck defined strategy and operational decision making of the company. This is something that John said many times publicly," he said.

But he was asked specifically about MPLS, the spokesman said the company does not provide "public updates on the lines of each employee reports."

Ethernet market continues to rebound as Cisco leads HP

Ethernet market continues to rebound as Cisco leads HP:

Ethernet switching market worldwide (Layer 2/3) produced revenues of $ US5.8 billion in the second quarter of 2015 (2Q15), an increase of 1.0 percent year over year and 7.6 percent increase quarter by quarter.

Meanwhile, the global provider router market operator and full service continued to recover from recent declines year over year, revenues of 11.5 percent year on year and sequential growth of 11 2Q15, 5 percent.

These growth rates are based on preliminary findings published in the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Change Worldwide Quarterly Tracker Tracker Ethernet router.

From a geographic perspective, Asia / Pacific, including Japan (APJ) experienced a slight decrease of 2.4 percent over the previous year despite a sequential increase of 12.3 percent.

"Total revenue and port shipment growth was weaker than expected in 2Q15," said Rohit Mehra, vice president, Network Infrastructure, IDC.

"Even the relatively strong 10Gb segment saw lower results than expected.

"Given the increasing workloads in systems across the enterprise, data center and service providers, this weakness is likely the result of the anticipation and delay around new and emerging speeds, intensifying competitive landscape making decisions, and of course, continued macroeconomic concerns. "

Switch 10Gb Ethernet (Layer 2/3) revenues decreased by -3.9 per year to year, coming in just under $ US2.1 billion, and 10Gb Ethernet switch port shipments increased strongly 16.4 percent during the year with almost 7.3 million ports shipped in 2Q15, while average selling prices continued to decline.

40Gb Ethernet income reached more than $ US500 million for the third consecutive quarter in 2Q15, increasing 59.7 percent during the year.

10Gb and 40Gb Ethernet should remain the main drivers of global Ethernet switch market in the short term. 1Gb Ethernet switch revenue declined slightly (-1.5 percent year on year) as this segment continues to face price erosion.

The provider of enterprise router market and comprehensive service has increased by 11.5 percent over the year of the year in 2Q15. Unlike the previous quarter, companies and providers of services segment experienced strong growth.

The business segment increased 8.3 percent year over year after year and 7.7 percent in the quarter to 2Q15.

12.5 percent year segment service providers performed particularly well, growing in years and 12.7 percent quarter on quarter.

This will be a market to watch closely in the coming quarters as defined software architectures are beginning to be felt across the WAN, enabling network operators and service providers to benefit from these new capabilities.

The market for enterprise routers and combined service provider also saw good performances in all regions - APJ also saw a positive quarter, with growth of 8.9 percent on an annual basis in 2Q15.

Cisco ended the quarter with 1.9 percent year-on-year growth of Ethernet switching market and the market share of 59.9 percent, slightly higher than its 59.4 percent stake in 2q14 figure.

In the 10GbE segment hotly contested, Cisco held 57.5 percent market share 2Q15, down from 61.1 percent in the previous quarter and 60.9 per cent stake in 2q14.

Net service provider business and business Cisco Router increased 14.9 percent year on year.

HP's Ethernet switching revenue declined -2.6 percent year over year, but increased by 22.9 percent in the quarter 2Q15. Since HP switch market grew at 9.5 percent against 8.3 percent in the first quarter of 2015, but decreased 9.9 percent of its shares in 2q14.

Juniper has recovered after a first quarter down on the Ethernet switch with an increase of 6.9 percent and a sequential growth of 15.5 percent in 2Q15.

Your income decreased year after year for the fourth consecutive router quarter to -4.5 percent in a year to year basis, despite an increase of 18.8 percent sequentially.

"The price drop switch port has a flattening effect on the overall market growth, while the demand for switches, especially the Ethernet ports of 10Gb and 40Gb switching increases," adds Petr Jirovský, Director research , networking Trackers IDC Group.

"As the new rules at higher speeds like 25Gb, 50Gb and 100Gb Ethernet grow to a critical mass in the coming years, we expect this segment to remain dynamic and interesting for the foreseeable future."

4 Reasons Why Morgan Stanley Is Downgrading Cisco

4 Reasons Why Morgan Stanley Is Downgrading Cisco:

Still Cause For Concern

Morgan Stanley has downgraded Cisco from an "overweight" rating to "equal weight" following the networking giant's positive fourth-quarter fiscal year 2015 earnings report last week that beat analysts' estimates.

According to the Morgan Stanley report, led by analyst James Faucette, Cisco has a tough road ahead due to "stiff" competitive playing fields, a "weak" product refresh cycle, and excessive research and development spending in order to prevent market share loss, according to a recent report. Faucette also doesn't expect the San Jose, Calif.-based company to make any "needle moving" acquisitions in the near future.

Although the firm downgraded Cisco, Morgan Stanley is still maintaining its $30 price target on the company's stock. Cisco declined to comment on the report.

Of course, purchases often come with a high price, considering the exorbitant valuations for major new security companies. From cyber security Tanium currently attracting new funding to be valued at about $ 2.5 billion, Dan Primack of Fortune and Leena Rao said this week. And from illumio network security it has raised $ 100 million in April that valued at $ 1 billion, according to private equity and venture capital research firm Pitchbook. These high valuations do not seem to care about Cisco, however, as Kramer said the company "has achieved the balance to do so." Currently it has $ 60.4 billion in cash and investments.

For now, the safety of total revenue accounts for only a fraction of Cisco. In the fourth quarter, sales of security products was $ 464 million compared to $ 5 billion in traditional switching and routing business of the company, for example. And while Cisco has focused on safety, security business has not exactly been growing like wildfire. Security sales only increased by more than 4% in the fourth quarter of 2015 compared to the same period of 2014.If Cisco wants to make safety an important part of your business, the acquisitions could be a way to get there. Or it could simply be a waste of money as $ acquiring rocker maker Pure Digital cameras in 2009 as part of a failed divert 590 million consumer products. The company also recently sold its set-top box Television Paris-based Technicolor $ 600 million after inheriting the range of its $ 6.9 billion in telecommunications and buying TV maker Scientific Atlanta in 2005.
